Projects In Progress

As the fastest growing YMCA, and 18th largest YMCA in membership, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads continues to expand! Visit this page often to hear the latest on how your YMCA is being enhanced with new facilities, innovative programming and endless possibilities.

Renovations Enhance Facilities
At the end of October, the Taylor Bend Family YMCA underwent a transformation that added about 3,700 square feet of functional fitness space that has been a welcome addition for members.

On the first floor, one-third of the gym has become an enclosed Free Weight Center. Relocating the free weights downstairs made room for a much needed second FitLinxx-equipped Cybex Eagle circuit line, as well as some light free weights and a more expansive stretching area. Directly adjacent to the existing cardio area is nearly 1,800 square feet with over 30 pieces of additional cardio equipment.

In addition to the fitness floor renovations, the area currently occupied by the tennis courts will soon become a fabulous outdoor aquatic center, which will include a bathhouse, splash park, kiddie pool with a toddler slide and an activity pool for families. The activity pool will include a slide, water walk and a basketball hoop. The new center is scheduled to open for Memorial Day.

“We want our members to know that we’re listening to them and will continue to do all we can to ensure a positive YMCA experience every time they visit,” says Keaton Finch, Executive Director of the Taylor Bend family center.

A major renovation of the Norfolk Family YMCA is also underway. Work is nearly complete on a new, larger Spinning studio, a new Group Exercise studio and a larger, new Mind & Body studio. A second elevator will be available soon to make it easier to get to the new studios.

Next on the renovation schedule is work to add a brand new ChildWatch area with a fun, new indoor playground, a new entrance on Bute Street and an expanded lobby for members to enjoy spending time together.
