The program operates September through mid-June and begins each afternoon at the close of school. Transportation is provided for youth living in the Broad Creek Communities.

Instructional Swimming Classes
The Community Services YMCA provides Swim Lesson scholarships and transportation to youth living in the Broad Creek Community.
Parent Education
YMCA Parenting Education programs provide parents skills to improve communication, set boundaries and structure, and strengthen parent-child relations. The programs provide parents with the knowledge necessary to help their children gain a sense of belonging, grow a self-identity, build self-esteem, learn leadership skills, improve time management and develop conflict resolution skills. The YMCA offers these programs:
  • Impact Parenting - A video based instructional program that teaches parenting skills using a holistic approach through the Active Parent curriculum.
  • Parent Connect - A facilitated support group for parents of children of all ages, designed for sharing ideas and resolving conflicts in a healthy and safe learning environment.
  • Parenting for Parents with Children Involved in Norfolk Juvenile Court System - A grant funded program developed for parents of children who are involved with the Norfolk Juvenile Justice system. This program satisfies court mandated parenting training and is available only through a referral process.
Positive Action
The Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation (VTSF) funds many area nonprofit organizations for the purpose of conducting educational programs for youth of all ages about tobacco use prevention. The YMCA implements the Positive Action curriculum which teaches youth an array of positive messages to assist them in making healthy life choices.
ACE - Assets in Early Childhood Education
This project was created to strengthen the connection between adults and the young children they care for in early childhood settings. The ACE project was designed to connect the care and education of young children with the strength-based approach to healthy youth development based on the Search Institute's 40 Fundamental Assets. Through funding provided by The United Way of South Hampton Roads, the YMCA offers a nine-hour training course to providers of early childhood education and care.
The YMCA is committed to providing programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. If you and your family need financial assistance in paying fees for YMCA programs or membership, just ask!
