Early Adventures is a collaborative program offered by the Chesapeake Public Schools System and the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. The program is a free program funded by the Virginia Preschool Initiative Act for the purpose of serving those children who are continuously exposed to high-risk factors and situations that are likely to have an adverse impact on their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Kindergarten readiness is the thrust. Early Adventures follows the Chesapeake Public Schools' "A" and "B" school schedule.

Program Goals
Early Discoveries' primary goal is to get the child "ready to learn." We accomplish this through a safe developmentally-appropriate learning environment that will allow the child to grow physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually. Our goals are:
  • To enable children to experience intellectual growth and educational stimulation
  • To help children become emotionally secure
  • To help children become socially well adjusted
  • To enable each child to acquire physical well-being
  • To enable each child to develop and express their individuality through creativity
Curriculum
The Early Adventures program provides a developmentally appropriate, hands-on, learning environment for children through the use of Creative Curriculum. This curriculum is implemented through the use of interest centers such as:
  • Blocks
  • Dramatic play
  • Manipulatives
  • Art
  • Sand & water
  • Language & listening
  • Music
  • Cooking
  • Computers
  • Outside play

All materials within interest centers are multicultural and free of gender bias. Bulletin boards, dress-up clothes, puzzles, books, and music expose the children to the richness of the cultural diversity within the city.

Parent communication includes home visits by the teachers, staff, family involvement specialists, oral and written communication, progress reports and parent-teacher conferences.
