Health and fitness has been extremely important to me during the past 25 years of my life. As an active woman, I compete in the sport of racquetball at the local, national and international level, as well as professionally. Racquetball is a fast endurance sport, so I cross-train and eat right to maintain the high skill level necessary.
This commitment to health and fitness became a lifestyle within my family. I made fitness a priority early on, exercising and competing in racquetball during both of my pregnancies, which allowed me to be back on the court within 10 days of having my children.
Staying healthy and working on my fitness continues today. The benefits were never so evident as when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in March of 2004. Throughout my treatments, I continued to workout almost on a daily basis. Although I had five months of chemotherapy and 33 days of radiation, I was still able to get in my routine workouts. In October of 2004, I competed in three separate divisions of the United States National Racquetball Doubles Championships, winning one and finishing second in the others. With the help and support of my family, friends, my wonderful medical team and the YMCA, I was able to overcome this frightening disease.
I hope that my story inspires you to create and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I look forward to seeing you at the YMCA and on the court!
