  • Cancer Exercise Training
Not long ago, cancer patients were put on bed rest and told not to exert themselves during and after treatment. There was widespread misunderstanding between exercise and cancer survivorship. But now cancer patients and health professionals are becoming increasingly aware of the positive impact that moderate physical activity and stress reduction techniques have on the quality of life.

A roundtable covened by the American College of Sports Medicine recently concluded that some exercise training during and after treatment improves physical functioning, quality of life and cancer related fatigue in several case studies.

If you are a cancer survivor or have recently complete treatment, you are invited to meet with Dick Drumm, Fitness Coordinator and Certified Cancer Exercise Trainor to help you plan and implement a program to improve your strength, endurance and overall functional ability. Please call him at 449-8897 or email at ddrumm@ymcashr.org.

  • Penguin Plunge 2012
The 15th Annual YMCA Penguin Plunge is here and is happening Saturday, February 25th at the Ramada Inn. Plungers will storm into the icy Atlantic waters to raise funds for the Y’s We Build People program. WBP affords children in our community the opportunity to attend camp, swim lessons, sports programs, etc. who are not otherwise able to pay.

Sheila Davies, Kill Devil Hills mayor, has agreed to brave the waves and she is in turn challenging you to get chilly too! Plungers 12-99 will pay $25 and Little Dippers, ages 5-11, will pay $10.00. If you don’t want to plunge in, you can help raise money to send someone of your choosing in!
$100 raised will send them in up to their little toes
$200 raised will send them in up to their knees
$400 raised will send them in up to their waist
$600 raised sends them all into the icy waters!

If they really don’t want to go all in, the person of your choosing can raise another $400 to get themselves out! It sounds crazy, but we are crazy for a great cause.
