A Summer to Succeed

5 July 2016

When school ends and summer vacation begins, the Y continues to emphasize academic achievement and character development in summer camp programs for hundreds of local youth. This summer, through a pilot partnership between the YMCA of the USA and BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), the Y is launching the Power Scholars Academy at the Greenbrier Family YMCA in Chesapeake. The Power Scholars Academy tackles summer learning loss while supporting the academic, physical and emotional development of youth. During the eight-week camp, approximately 100 youth will engage in literacy, math and structured enrichment activities, as well as daily physical recreation. The camp improves students’ educational readiness so children enter the next school year prepared for success. The Power Scholars Academy relies on community donations, in addition to grant funding, to implement a quality program. If you would like to contribute to this new initiative, please contact Katie Burgus, Executive Director of the Greenbrier Family YMCA, at kburgus@ymcashr.org.
