Fighting Back

8 September 2016

Ten years ago, Bill Hevener was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Since that time, he has gone to therapy, worked with a personal trainer and done all that is within his control to keep his symptoms at bay. Earlier this year he decided to participate in the Y’s Transitions Program, a partnership program between the YMCA and Sentara designed to assist participants with their ongoing exercise plan after they have completed physical therapy sessions allotted by their insurance. William worked out through functional fitness and boxing and his progress has been remarkable. Family and friends comment on the change they’ve seen in William just within the last six months. William comes to the Y almost every day, and recently told his support group, “When I’m at the Y, I don’t feel like I have Parkinson’s.”
