Solomon's Story

30 December 2013

“I just want to win.” This was the answer that Solomon gave when he was asked why he chose to start the Y-Change program at the Indian River Family YMCA. Solomon had been reflecting on his life and the fact that for the majority of his 29 years he had been overweight. He came from a family where time together meant good food and eating. Food was seen as an expression of love, and eating together was how the family fellowshipped. With many of his family members plagued with high blood pressure, diabetes, and the many other issues that accompany these diseases, Solomon decided that he had to make some changes in his life.

And that is exactly what he did. Through Y-Change, a complimentary six-week program for YMCA members, and with the help of his coach and fellow Y-Change participants, Solomon has changed the way he looks at food. He has become educated in nutrition, and now incorporates exercise and activity into his daily routine.

The road has not been an easy one. Several traumatic events have occurred in Solomon’s family since beginning this journey. In the beginning, he would have made justifications or excuses to quit because of his circumstances. But with the knowledge and practices he has gained from participating in the Y-Change program, he has courageously stayed on track and wants to share his experience with others who want to live a healthy life. Solomon has lost over 80 pounds and is still losing the extra weight. But he is quick to point out, “It’s not just about losing weight – it's about living life more abundantly.”

When their work schedules allow, going to the Y is now a family affair. Four-year-old son, Mesiear, enjoys playing while mom, Tiffany, and dad work out together. Everyone wins as their weight continues to come down, and Solomon is using the principles he has learned from Y-Change and applying them to other areas of his life.
