Suffolk hosts 8th Annual YMCA Spring Stride
The Suffolk Family YMCA is hosting the 8th Annual Suffolk Family YMCA Spring Stride in partnership with the Tidewater Striders on Saturday, April 3, 2010 from 9 am - 12 pm. Races include 5K/1-miles fun run/walk. The 5K will be held at Lone Star Lakes Park in Suffolk, VA. First 200 registrants will receive a free t-shirt. Golden Runners and race pass users must pay $5 to receive t-shirts (limited supply). Sign up online or at the Member Services desk.

Step Up Challenge Bootcamp - Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA
1-2pm, Blocker #201, Y MEMBERS ONLY

Y Members & Non-Members ages 8 years & up get ready for the climb with the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA - the event's official trainer. A FREE Bootcamp program is available when you visit Member Services to register & show proof of event registration (Non-members must also fill-in Guest Form & show picture ID).

*Non-Members: Boot Camp registration allows FREE use of the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA while you train with us through April 25, 2010. Sign-up for membership with the Blocker YMCA by May 31, 2010 & get no join fee for participating in the Challenge & Boot Camp!

Ballet Begins - Salem YMCA Family Center
6 week session where youth ages 3-5 will learn the basics of ballet. A "mini recital" will be held during the final class so families will be able to see the progress made by the dancers.

Lifeguard Training Begins - Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA
March 15 - April 8, Open to Public
In order to receive certification you must attend all classes below:

-Monday March 15 6:00-7:30pm swimming pretest
-Monday March 22 6:00-10:00pm
-Wednesday March 24 6:00-10:00pm
-Thursday March 25 6:00-8:00 at Virginia Wesleyan College Pool
-Saturday March 27 9:00am-6:00pm
-Sunday March 28 9:00am-6:00pm
-Monday March 29 6:00-10:00pm
-Thursday April 1 6:00-8:00 at Virginia Wesleyan College Pool
-Saturday April 3 9:00am-6:00pm
-Sunday April 4 3:00-6:00pm
-Thursday April 8 6:00-9:00pm

To be part of the lifeguard training class you must pass the swimming skills pretest:
Swim 500 meters non-stop of the following:
-100 meters strong front crawl with face in the water, flutter kick and rhythmic breathing
-100 meters breaststroke
-100 meters sidestroke
-100 meters sidestroke 1 arm forward
-100 meters breaststroke kick on your back hands on your stomach
-Tread water for 2 minutes legs only and hands out of the water

If you are unable to complete this swim you will not be able to attend the remainder of the class. All but $25.00 of the registration fee will then be refunded.

Upon completion of the course participants will be certified in the following:
-YMCA Lifeguarding
-Red Cross Lifeguarding
-Red Cross CPR/AED
-Red Cross Oxygen Administration
-Red Cross First Aid

Cost of the Course:
$150.00 for YMCA members / $200.00 for potential members
Age Requirement: 16 years and older

Active Older Adults - Suffolk Family YMCA
Join us for games (Bridge, Dominoes, etc) at 9:45 am in the Childcare Center. After our games we will be going to Ruby Tuesdays for lunch.

Parents' Night Out - Spring Fun - Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA
This program allows parents to have a night out on the town while their children (ages 6 weeks - 9 years) enjoy a night of fun activities supervised by YMCA certified and trained staff.

6:30 - 9:30 pm; FREE
Registration is required; sign up at the Member Services desk beginning the Sunday prior.
