The YMCA of South Hampton Roads proposes to create a $5.8 million regional network of environmentally friendly day camps to enhance outdoor camping experiences for children and provide their parents with quality licensed options for summertime day care.

The first of what are projected to be three “green” camps will be situated in Northwest River Park in southern Chesapeake. Planning for this camp is underway. Once necessary permits have been received and sufficient funds have been raised though the Imagine the Possibilities campaign, construction will begin.

The YMCA's goals for establishing Regional Day Camps are:

• Improve licensed quality child care
• Teach environmental awareness and conservation
• Improve children's academic performance through camp-related activities
• Fight childhood obesity by increasing children's activity
• Forge a lifelong interest of the great outdoors
• Provide age appropriate activities
• Provide access to all
