YMCA of South Hampton Roads Activates COVID-19 Protocol to Safely Manage Covid Case

Effingham St. Family YMCA Notifies Child Care Families, Sanitizes Facility to Safely Manage COVID Case

The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned April 3 that a child in the Effingham St. Family YMCA’s e-Learning Academy has tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to child care families and Y staff. The Virginia Department of Health has already been contacted to begin its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the families of the children in the same group as the affected child were encouraged to monitor for symptoms. The site has been cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines.


Anthony Walters, President and CEO of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads stated, “We know that these risks are evident as we navigate the COVID-19 health crisis. We remain committed to following the established protocols outlined by the CDC, VDH and VDSS. We are treating this matter with the utmost concern, and we will continue to work with local agencies and leaders for appropriate follow up.”


Previous notice was communicated to all necessary parties per the Y's COVID-19 response protocol in the following cases:

March 22, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned on March 19 that members visiting the YMCA at Edinburgh have tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The members last participated in Regymen classes March 10-16. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who attended the same classes as the affected member. The Virginia Department of Health has already begun its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, we will close the YMCA at Edinburgh until Monday, March 22 and pause Regymen classes until Monday, March 29 in order to sanitize thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines

March 19, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned March 17 that a member visiting the YMCA at Edinburgh has tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The member last participated in Regymen classes March 9-11, 13 and 16. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who attended the same classes as the affected member. The Virginia Department of Health has already begun its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines.

March 18, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned March 15 that a member visiting the YMCA at Edinburgh has tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). March 16, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned March 15, 2021 that a staff member supporting group exercise classes at the Greenbrier Family YMCA and YMCA at Edinburgh has tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The staff member was last at the Greenbrier Family YMCA on March 8 and the YMCA at Edinburgh on March 10. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who had recently visited the Y. The Virginia Department of Health has already begun its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the facilities were cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines.

March 13, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned March 10, 2021 that a staff member supporting Stay & Play services at the Currituck Family YMCA has tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to families and Y staff. The Virginia Department of Health has already been contacted to begin its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. The site has been cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines.

February 23, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned February 20, 2021 that a parent of a participant in the e-Learning program at the Eastern Shore Family YMCA had tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The child of the affected parent last attended the program February 19 and did not use any amenities inside the building other than the gymnasium and multi-purpose room. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who had recently visited the Y. The Virginia Department of Health has already begun its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines.

February 17, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned February 16, 2021 that a member at the James L. Camp, Jr. Family YMCA had tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The member last visited the Y on February 11. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who had recently visited the Y. The Virginia Department of Health has already begun its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines.

February 16, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned that two children in the e-Learning Academy, a staff in sports and staff in preschool at the YMCA of Portsmouth reported February 11 and 12, 2021 a positive case for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). These cases are isolated situations as there was no contact between the children, nor an overlap of time in the same space. The child in the Kindergarten class last attended the program February 8 and 10, and participated in youth basketball February 6. The child in the second grade class last attended the program February 8. The children in the e-Learning wore masks at all times and practiced social distancing. Within the basketball program, masks are removed while playing. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to participants within the program. The Virginia Department of Health has already begun its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines.

February 10, 2020: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned February 8, 2021 that a staff member supporting e-Learning Academy at the Greenbrier Family YMCA has tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The staff member last worked on February 2. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to families and Y staff. The Virginia Department of Health has already been contacted to begin its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. The site has been cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

February 10, 2020: The YMCA of South Hampton Roads learned February 4, 2021 that a member at the YMCA of South Boston/Halifax County had tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The member last visited the Y January 25-30. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who participated in the same classes. The Virginia Department of Health has already begun its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

February 5, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned February 5, 2021 that a participant in the e-Learning Academy at the YMCA of Portsmouth had tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The member was last at the Greenbrier Family YMCA on January 26 and 27 and YMCA at Edinburgh January 25 and 30. The visitor was last at the Y January 30. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to participants and staff present with the affected spectator. The Virginia Department of Health has already begun its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing.

February 1, 2021: The YMCA South Hampton Roads learned January 29 that a staff member supporting Stay & Play and I-Zone services at the Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA has tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to families, members who visited the facility at the time the staff was present, and Y staff. The Virginia Department of Health has already been contacted to begin its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. The staff was last at the Y the evenings of January 26 and 28. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to teams present with the affected staff. The member last visited the Y January 14-16, 2021. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who had recently visited the Y. The Virginia Department of Health executed their process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, part of the child care program closed beginning Tuesday, November 17th. The site has been cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines.

November 17, 2020: the YMCA learned Monday, November 16 that a youth soccer participant at the Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA had tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The child last visited the Y for a soccer game Saturday, November 14. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to teammates of the affected player and other league teams who had been scheduled to play on Saturday. The Virginia Department of Health executed their process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing.  

November 10, 2020: the YMCA learned November 9th that a staff member at the Albemarle Family YMCA had tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The staff member was last at the Albemarle Family YMCA on Friday, November 6th. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to families with children in care and the Y’s staff team. The North Carolina Department of Health immediately began its process of contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

October 30, 2020: the YMCA learned late Friday, October 30th that a youth soccer participant at the Indian River Family YMCA tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to teammates of the affected player and other league teams who may have had possible exposure. The Virginia Department of Health performed contact tracing, identifying any possible contact that would require quarantine and possibly COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, affected teams did not participate in games scheduled for Saturday, October 31st and resumed play the following week. 

October 23, 2020: the YMCA learned Wednesday, October 21 that a member at the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA had tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The member last visited the Y the evening of October 15. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to and guidance from VDH, and notification to members who had recently visited the Y. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly the evening of October 21st in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

October 14, 2020: the YMCA was made aware that a staff member at the YMCA of Portsmouth tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus). The staff member was last at the YMCA of Portsmouth on Thursday, October 8. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to and guidance from the VDH, notification to members who had recently visited the Y and the Y’s staff team. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly the evenings of October 12th and 13th in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

October 13, 2020: a parent with children in the James L. Camp, Jr. Family YMCA childcare program reported a positive test result for COVID-19. The Y immediately instituted its COVID-19 response protocol, including notification to childcare families and staff, and notification to and guidance from the VDH. The site has been properly cleaned and sanitized in accordance with CDC guidelines.

October 9, 2020: a member at the Mt. Trashmore Family YMCA reported a positive test for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The member last visited the Y October 5. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who had recently visited the Y and guidance from the VDH. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly the evening of October 9th in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

October 9, 2020: a member at the Indian River Family YMCA reported a positive test result for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The member last visited the Y the morning of October 6. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who had recently visited the Y and guidance from the VDH including contacting any possible contacts that would require possible quarantine/COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly the evening of October 9th in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

October 7, 2020: a staff member in the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA child care program reported a positive test result for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to families and Y staff, cleaning and sanitization, and notification to and guidance from the VDH and the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS). To ensure the safety of the community, part of the child care program was closed beginning Thursday, October 8th. The site has been cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

October 6, 2020: a member at the Indian River Family YMCA reported a positive test result for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The member last visited the Y the evening of September 30. Guidance from the VDH was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result, including contacting any possible contacts that would require possible quarantine/COVID-19 testing. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly the evening of October 6th in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

October 3, 2020: a staff member at the Mt. Trashmore Family YMCA preschool program reported to the Y a positive test result for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to parties that had direct or possible contact with this staff person, a partial closure of the effected area of the program, cleaning and sanitization, and the notification to and guidance from the VDH and the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result.  

September 24, 2020: a youth soccer participant at the Great Bridge Hickory Family YMCA reported to the Y a positive test result for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The child last visited the Y for practice Monday, September 21. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to teammates of the affected player and other league teams who had been scheduled to practice on Monday. Guidance from the VDH was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result. To ensure the safety of the community, the team did not participate in games scheduled for Saturday, September 26th and resumed play the following week. 

September 24, 2020: a member at the Hilltop Family YMCA reported to the Y that they had tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The member last visited the Y the morning of Monday, September 21. The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who had recently visited the Y. Guidance from the VDH was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result. To ensure the safety of the community, the facility was cleaned and sanitized thoroughly the evening of September 24th in accordance with CDC guidelines. 

August 14, 2020: A child attending the Effingham Street Family YMCA school-age summer camp program tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The Y immediately instituted its COVID response protocol, including notification to members who had recently visited the Y and camper families, and to further ensure the safety of the community, the facility closed Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16 to be cleaned and sanitized thoroughly in accordance with CDC guidelines. The school-age camp program closed until August 31 and the kindergarten camp program resumed Monday, August 17. Guidance from the VDH and the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result. 

August 11, 2020: A staff member of the YMCA of Portsmouth reported to the Y on Monday, August 10 that they tested positive for COVID-19. The staff member was last at the YMCA of Portsmouth on Thursday, August 6. An immediate response, including notification to members who had recently visited the facility and staff team, and a deep cleaning and sanitization of the facility on the evening of August 10, were initiated. Guidance from the VDH was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result. 

August 7, 2020: A member who visited the YMCA of Portsmouth Monday, August 3 reported to the Y on August 6 that they tested positive for COVID-19. An immediate response, including notification to members who had visited the facility and camper families, deep cleaning and sanitization of the facility were initiated. Guidance from the VDH was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result. 

July 28, 2020: A camp counselor at the Mt. Trashmore Family YMCA reported that they tested positive for COVID-19. An immediate response, including notification to parties that had direct or possible contact with this staff person, a closure of the facility for cleaning and sanitization, and the notification to and guidance from the VDH and the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result.

July 13, 2020: Siblings utilizing the Salem Family YMCA childcare program site tested positive for COVID-19. An immediate response, including notification to parties that had direct or possible contact with the program participant, a closure of the facility for cleaning and sanitization, and the notification to and guidance from the VDH and the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result.

June 2, 2020: A participant utilizing the Mt. Trashmore Family YMCA childcare program site tested positive for COVID-19. An immediate response, including notification to parties that had direct or possible contact with the program participant, a closure of the facility for cleaning and sanitization, and the notification to and guidance from the VDH and the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) was executed upon the Y becoming aware of this positive test result.
