Planting the Seeds of the Future

7 October 2012

The Effingham Family YMCA has collaborated with Virginia Cooperative Extension Program - VCE - and the Portsmouth Master Gardener Program, in an effort to provide an opportunity to grow a garden in the city. The Cooperative Extension is a part of both the Virginia State University and Virginia Tech. The nine-week program will provide a curriculum which includes instruction and hands-on activities for children ages 6-12. The curriculum supports SOL learning requirements and reinforces science curriculum taught in Portsmouth Public Schools. The Fall/Winter garden will be harvested in November and will provide a bounty from the garden for the After-School Harvest Dinner held on November 20, 2012. Twenty volunteers from the community and YMCA staff have joined hands to make this unique program a success. Follow along with us on our Facebook page as we track our progress!
