YMCA of South Hampton Roads Announces New COO

NORFOLK, September 1 -YMCA of South Hampton Roads has named Senior Vice President, Tom Flynn the new Chief Operating Officer of the association, effective September 1. He succeeds new CEO, Billy George, as longtime CEO Chuck Harris retires this September.

Tom has enjoyed a 27-year professional career in the YMCA, serving communities in Houston, Texas, Rochester, New York and South Hampton Roads. He arrived in South Hampton Roads in 1997 as YMCA District Vice President for the YMCAs in Virginia Beach. Most recently, Flynn served as a Senior Vice President of Operations for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads.

"The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is recognized as a community leader in the fight against obesity," said Flynn, "and I look forward to new and innovative ways to strengthen kids, families and the community in my new role with the Y."

Tom resides in Virginia Beach with his wife Lynn Skeele-Flynn, married 31 years, who is also a YMCA Senior Vice President. Tom and Lynn have two sons; Derrick, an architect in Los Angeles and Brandon, golf professional residing in Denver.

Flynn grew up in Northern New York and graduated from LSU with a degree in Health & Physical Education in 1981. With a wide range of experience as a YMCA professional in Management, Business Operations, Financial Development, Fitness, Sports, Aquatics, Youth Development and Community Outreach, Tom is uniquely qualified to serve in his new position as COO. 

Tom has served his community in many different areas over the years, most recently as LEAD Hampton Roads class of 2012. He also served as lay leader and church council member at the Lynnhaven United Methodist Church, and volunteered in Methodist Missions. Also, Flynn volunteered as a youth sports coach with several organizations. 

Tom Flynn embodies the YMCA values and lives them each day. He is committed to health and fitness and can be seen working out daily at his local Y.
