Program Updates

We're so excited to see you again and to begin providing programs! Following state guidelines, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads has put safety measures in place. Click each program area below to read the latest updates.

Child Care

The Y's eLearning Academy is a new program designed to support families with flexible full-day care when virtual learning begins. Learn more about e-Learning Academy


As schools begin to return to in-person learning, before and after-school programs will be provided. Learn more about before and after-school care.


Stay & Play centers and Interactive Zones have reopened for most YMCA. Capacity is limited per licensing guidelines and care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. View status and hours at your YMCA.


Per state mandates and following guidelines from the CDC, Department of Education and American Academy of Pediatrics, anyone 5 years of age or older is required to wear a mask at all times while at the Y. In Virginia, masks may be removed while actively exercising. In North Carolina, masks must be worn while actively exercising.


Play Zones and indoor playground structures remain closed.


Parents Time Out has resumed at some YMCAs. Registration is required.

Family Programs

Open Swim is available for families and reservations are required. Please see swimming guidelines for more info.


Birthday Parties have begun at the YMCA at JT's Camp Grom.

Health & Wellness

FITNESS CLASSES

  • Class participation will be limited in accordance with state guidelines. Reservations are required.
  • Spaces are designated on the floor for participants to ensure a minimum of ten feet of separation between students. Please stay in your designated area.
  • Staff will clean and disinfect equipment and place it near each workout spot before class begins.
  • Please leave equipment out when class ends, so that instructors can clean and disinfect before putting it away.
  • Where appropriate, please bring your own equipment (yoga mat, blocks, etc.)
  • In North Carolina, masks are required at all times while indoors at the Y, per order of the NC Governor, including while actively exercising.

REGYMEN FITNESS

  • Regymen Fitness workouts have resumed at the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA and YMCA at Edinburgh. Reservations are required.
  • Participants must have the monthly add-on to their active YMCA membership account or purchase workouts individually.
  • Loaner heart-rate tracking belts are not available at this time.
  • Coaches will clean and disinfect all equipment before each workout begins.
  • Do not share equipment with other members.
  • Stay ten feet apart from other participants at all times.
  • Leave equipment out when the workout ends, so that coaches can clean and disinfect before putting it away.

PERSONAL TRAINING

  • Personal training is available. Registration is required.
  • Trainers are required to wear a cloth face covering.
  • Clients and trainers must stay at least ten feet apart at all times.
  • Trainers will clean and disinfect all equipment before each workout.
  • Leave equipment out when the workout ends, so that trainers can clean and disinfect before putting it away.
  • Clients are encouraged to bring their own foam rollers, mats and blocks.
  • Virtual training options will also be available.

BASKETBALL

  • Bring your own water from home. Touchless water bottle filling stations will be available, but water fountains will be closed.
  • Unless needed to allow for social distancing in child care programs, gymnasiums are currently open for shooting baskets.
  • Pickup basketball will return on October 16 with the following guidelines:
    • A maximum of 15 people will be allowed in the gym at a time.
    • First come, first served format. Reservations are not required. 
    • We recommend that you play with members of your household or people who you regularly interact with.
    • Maintain 10' of distance during play, except for incidental contact.
    • We recommend taking breaks from play every 15 minutes to minimize contact.
    • Bring your own ball.
    • Face coverings are required except while exercising.
    • Sanitize your hands immediately following play.

GOLF

  • The First Tee golf and life lessons program has resumed. 

RACQUETBALL

  • Court reservations are required for racquetball. Each court reservation includes up to two players. 
  • Only solo and singles play is available. Players must maintain 10' of distance per state guidelines.
  • Bring your own water from home. Touchless water bottle filling stations will be available, but water fountains will be closed.
  • Please bring your own racquet and racquetballs. YMCA equipment will not be available for loan.

TENNIS/PICKLEBALL

  • Court reservations are required for tennis and pickleball on tennis courts. Each court reservation includes up to two players. 
  • Reservations are not required for pickleball courts that are housed in YMCA gymnasiums.
  • Only singles play is available. Players must maintain 10' of distance per state guidelines.
  • Bring your own water from home. Touchless water bottle filling stations will be available, but water fountains will be closed.
  • Please bring your own racquet and tennis balls or pickle balls. YMCA equipment will not be available for loan.

    YOUTH SOCCER

    • Youth Soccer has begun.

    Please take note of the states guidelines listed below as they differ slightly between Virginia and North Carolina.


    LAP SWIMMING: VIRGINIA

    • Reservations are required.
    • Please limit your swim to one swim per day.
    • Lap lanes will be limited to two swimmers per lane. Swimmers must stay 10' apart and begin swimming at opposite ends of the lane.
    • Children under the age of 13 must have a swim necklace indicating that they have passed the swim test in order to use lap swimming. 
    • Only swimmers with reservations will be allowed in the pool area. Parents may not remain on the pool deck, unless they also have a swim reservation.
    • Hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms will be closed.
    • We are happy to welcome nationwide members and guests back to the Y. Read our guest policy.

    LAP SWIMMING: NORTH CAROLINA

    • Reservations are required.
    • Please limit your swim to one swim per day.
    • Lap lanes will be limited to two swimmers per lane. Swimmers must stay 10' apart and begin swimming at opposite ends of the lane.
    • Children under the age of 13 must have a swim necklace indicating that they have passed the swim test in order to use lap swimming. 
    • Only swimmers with reservations will be allowed in the pool area. Parents may not remain on the pool deck, unless they also have a swim reservation.
    • Saunas and steam rooms will be closed.
    • Participants must be active members of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. We are unable to welcome nationwide members and guests at this time.

    OPEN SWIM: VIRGINIA

    • Open Swim is now available at Virginia pools. Reservations are required. Please limit your participation to one session per day.
    • Swim tests will be given at the start of each open swim session. When checking in, let YMCA staff know if you are interested in taking a swim test. All children under the age of 13 will be required to take/retake their swim test to be in the water beyond arm's reach of a parent/guardian.
    • U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets for nonswimmers must be provided by the member.
    • Please maintain at least ten feet of space between you and other swimmers (outside your family) at all times.
    • Hot tubs, saunas, splash pads, spray pools and interactive play features, which also includes our slides and wading pools are closed in Virginia.
    • We are happy to welcome nationwide members and guests back to the Y. Read our guest policy.

    OPEN SWIM: NORTH CAROLINA

    • Reservations are required. Please limit your participation to one session per day.
    • Swim tests will be given at the start of each open swim session. When checking in, let YMCA staff know if you are interested in taking a swim test. All children under the age of 13 will be required to take/retake their swim test to be in the water beyond arm's reach of a parent/guardian.
    • U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets for nonswimmers must be provided by the member. 
    • Slides will not be available.  
    • Please maintain at least ten feet of space between you and other swimmers (outside your family) at all times.
    • Participants must be active members of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. We are unable to welcome nationwide members and guests at this time.

    SWIM LESSONS


    WATER EXERCISE CLASSES

    • Reservations are required. Please limit your participation to one session per day.
    • Only participants with reservations will be allowed in the pool area.
    • Please maintain at least ten feet of space between you and other participants at all times.
    • Water fitness equipment may not be available for loan at your YMCA. Please see the class description on the reservation schedule for details.
