Camp History
In 1998, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads had a vision of building the first resident camp in the commonwealth of Virginia to add to its fast growing operation. The YMCA's property committee located the ideal piece of land located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The 151 acres of woods and wetlands and 1200 acres of pristine Chesapeake Bay shoreline were purchased in the spring of 1998.
Construction began in 1999, the same year Dan Credle was hired as Camp's Executive Director. Dan brought 22 years of YMCA resident camp experience to CSB. The Camp Silver Beach staff was then formed of thoroughly trained and well qualified counselors, administrators and property staff.
Virginia Wesleyan College was the first conference group to experience CSB in August of 1999. The first Family Camp was held Labor Day weekend in 1999 as well. Camp Silver Beach officially opened as a year-round camp and conference center on Memorial weekend in 2000. |
