Finding Strength and Community: Simone's Fitness Journey

30 December 2023

Simone shares her Y experience in her own words.

Simone Bilodeau and friends at the YMCA of Portsmouth

I started coming to the Y in 2018 when I was looking for a gym closer to home. I had my first child the year prior and I was ready to get back into shape and feel strong again. Finding out that my entire family could use the facilities for the price I used to pay for one gym membership elsewhere was a huge selling point for me, so we gave it a shot, not expecting what was to come.

Fast forward to now, you'll find me there six days a week, sometimes twice a day, taking fitness classes with some of the most dedicated and patient trainers I've met. There is "working out", and then there's WORKING OUT, and the latter is exactly what I've found taking Marco and Violeta's classes. Just when I think I've peaked, new goals develop based on the dynamic and evolving workouts we do. I'm constantly challenged, constantly motivated, and maybe constantly tired too...but that's a good sign, isn't it?

It didn't take long for me to find my fitness family here, with whom I get to laugh, complain and get a great workout in all at the same time. There's something about sharing 45 minutes with a group of people who make working out so fun that you almost forget that you're doing it. No matter the day you had, you can come here and leave in better spirits. Because I'm not as efficient at working out solo, knowing what I get to be a part of has me looking forward to walking through those doors every evening.

I can 100% say that I'm stronger, healthier and more confident in my abilities because of the Y and the people I've met here. The support and encouragement of my team sets the gold standard for how all fitness classes should feel, and I can't imagine my fitness journey any other way.

I'm glad we gave the Y a shot.
