Four years ago, life threw me a curveball: a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. Little did I know, a profound source of support awaited me just around the corner at the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA—Price Dodson, the program director and lead instructor of the Rock Steady Boxing program.

Rock Steady Boxing, an internationally recognized program specifically designed for those battling Parkinson's, became a part of my life. This innovative approach seeks to combat the progression of Parkinson's disease, a chronic degenerative neuromuscular condition. In each class, fighters engage in a comprehensive regimen, including strength and cardio training, balance exercises, hand-eye coordination drills, manual dexterity activities, and even voice exercises.

Living with the knowledge that there is no cure for Parkinson's, I quickly learned that participating in an exercise program like Rock Steady Boxing could be a game-changer. It became a powerful tool for slowing down the relentless progression of the disease.

Two years into my journey with Rock Steady Boxing, fueled by Price Dodson's support and encouragement, I transitioned from being a fighter to becoming a Rock Steady Boxing coach. This transformative experience allowed me to not only attend classes but also take an active role in shaping and developing sessions alongside Price.

Today, my role extends beyond my personal experience with Parkinson's. As a Rock Steady Boxing coach, I have the privilege of helping others facing similar challenges. The gym transformed into a sanctuary not only for physical exercise but also for forging connections facing the hurdles that Parkinson's throws our way.

Parkinson's may have entered my life unexpectedly, but Rock Steady Boxing and the mentorship of Price Dodson have turned the tide of this journey. As I continue to navigate life with Parkinson's, I am grateful for the opportunity to pay it forward. The Rock Steady Boxing program has become more than just a routine; it's a lifeline—a space where fighters become coaches, where courage is found, and where, together, we challenge the limitations of Parkinson's disease.
