YMCA TO DISTRIBUTE 300 THANKSGIVING MEALS TO COMMUNITY

Meals will be distributed on a first come, first served basis and any family in need is eligible to receive one.

WHERE/WHEN: Distribution sites will have varied hours, but all distribution will occur on November 22, 2021. Please see distribution schedule below.

Effingham Street Family YMCA: 4pm until all meals are distributed

Brighton Rock AME Zion Church, 1300 Centre Ave, Portsmouth: 2pm—3pm
Greenbrier Family YMCA: 2pm until all meals are distributed

YMCA on Granby: 2pm until all meals are distributed

WHY: This meal packaging and distribution event emphasizes the importance of addressing food insecurities throughout our communities, a pillar of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads Strategic Plan. A lack of access to nutritionally-balanced food options is an indicator of poor health outcomes and a reality for many families in our community. An approach built on collaborative partnerships and community integrated health strategies, such as this food distribution effort, drives the Y's work to remove barriers and create opportunities for everyone to reach their full potential and highest level of health. The YMCA distribution sites listed are designated YMCA Health Equity Campuses, and are working in their communities to open up access to healthy food and resources for a balanced lifestyle. These Health Equity Campuses help combat food insecurity through community health programs & education, cooking classes, food distribution events and mobile food pantries. Food insecurity, amplified by the COVID-19 Pandemic and made even more challenging as the holidays approach, have left too many in our area vulnerable. With the help of partners, both local and national, including Walmart, Costco, Penske, YUSA and more, this distribution event has been made possible.
