LIVESTRONG® AT THE YMCA comes to the YMCA of South Hampton Roads

23 September 2016

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads now offering LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a Physical Activity and Well-Being Initiative, at no cost to Cancer Survivors.

VIRGINIA BEACH, September 23- Beginning October 4, 2016 the YMCA of South Hampton Roads will be offering LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA through the Hilltop Family YMCA location to both members of the Y and non-members, at no cost to the participant. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a small-group program developed and established in partnership with the LIVESTRONG Foundation, assists those who are living with, through, or beyond cancer to strengthen their spirit, mind and body.

As a LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participant, the YMCA engages cancer survivors through an approach that focuses on the whole person. Participants work with trained Y staff to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA also encourages a warm spirit of community – a safe, comfortable place to build companionship with others affected by cancer, and share stories and inspiration.

Program Details:

  • Open to members and non-members of the Y who are at least 18 years old, at no cost to the participant 12-week program with two 90-minute sessions per week
  • Includes cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, balance, and flexibility exercises
  • Evaluation of fitness and quality of life assessments before and after participation (program participation contingent upon medical clearance from a medical professional)
  • Facilitated by YMCA-certified instructors

“Research shows exercise is the simplest way for cancer survivors to reduce fatigue, improve their mood and bounce back from the debilitating effects of cancer treatment more quickly,” said Andy Miller,  LIVESTRONG Executive Vice President. “But there weren’t enough programs to help people affected by cancer reach their health and well-being goals, so LIVESTRONG and YMCA of the USA joined forces to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. The Y is the perfect collaborator because of its national reach, commitment to meeting the needs of all community members and history of program innovation in support of health and wellness.”
