Week In Review: September 18

18 September 2015

Member Story Monday: Stephen
Stephen had always been health-conscious, trying to eat right and visiting the gym two or three times a week. However, after a diagnosis of colon cancer at the age of just 32, he began to look at diet and exercise more conscientiously. He now pays a lot more attention to what he eats and works out at the Y at least five days a week, even when he’s traveling. Today, Stephen is cancer-free and says, “I have a new appreciation for a functional body.” ‪#‎MemberStoryMonday‬

Transformation Tuesday
“The Diabetes Prevention Program at the Y has me on the right track for the first time in my life. I have tried to diet before but never had the correct information to keep it going for long. I felt like I was depriving myself and usually gave up after a short time. I read about this class and decided to give it a try.

Exercising has gone from being a dreaded activity to something fun with my family or on my own. On our last vacation we went biking for several hours and later climbed the Hatteras Lighthouse at night. Both of these activities were a way for me to get movement in but were enjoyed with my family. My girls tease about me parking further away from stores so I can get steps in each day. I am constantly looking for new ways for my family to participate in a fun activity together.

When it comes to food, I feel like I can enjoy eating without feeling guilt. Through this program, I have learned the correct way to calculate and balance what I eat. My family is eating healthier too as a result.

I have met a new group of friends who are also trying to improve their health, and they have been an encouragement to me. I have lost unwanted weight and gained the knowledge to live healthy. I am pushing any chance of developing diabetes far away from me. I feel like I can follow these new lessons and live actively and healthy for the rest of my life!” –Cherie

Thowback Thursday
In the 1890s, YMCA instructor William Morgan blended elements of basketball, tennis and handball and called his invention “Mintonette,” which later became known as “Volley Ball.” Today, more than 46 million Americans and 800 million people worldwide play volleyball weekly.

Feelgood Friday
Sheila began coming to the Y in early 2015. Since this time, she has become extremely active and is losing weight. She has participated in the Y-Change program, takes ballroom dance and water exercise classes, and gets a low-impact cardio workout in Zumba Gold. When Sheila’s mother recently passed away, she came to the Y to pray in the chapel with staff and members. Sheila is a favorite and loved by many at the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA.
