More Splash, Less Wait: Swim Lessons Are Growing at the Y
There’s no place like the Y for learning to swim. Every day in our pools, we see swimmers put their faces in the water for the first time, learn a new stroke, build confidence and develop skills that can help keep them safe for a lifetime.
Over the past year, we’ve heard from many families who are waiting to get into YMCA swim lessons. To meet the need, beginning in January 2027, we are expanding our swim lesson program to offer more lesson slots, smoother scheduling and consistent routines. We want every aspiring swimmer in our community to find a place in the water.
Making Room for More Swimmers
More families want swim lessons and we want to meet their needs. By expanding group swim lessons, we can make better use of our pool space and instructors so we can open more spots for our community. Ongoing private lessons will end December 31st, but private lessons will still be available where pool and instructor schedules allow. This change allows us to meet the increasing need for swim lessons at the Y.
What to Expect in January 2027
We’re making swim lessons easier to fit into your family’s routine, with longer sessions, consistent schedules and more opportunities to get in the water. Click each item below to learn more about how the changes we're making help serve your family better.
- Lessons will now run in 6-week sessions, giving swimmers more time to build skills and confidence.
- Swimmers will meet once per week for 30 minutes, with at least 25 minutes of active water time during every lesson.
- The overall price of a swim lesson session will change to reflect the additional lessons, but the per-lesson price will remain the same.
No more guessing when classes will be offered next month.
Swim lesson days and times will stay consistent from session to session, making it easier to find a time that works for your family and stick with it. During peak summer months when school is out, we’ll add even more lesson times while keeping our year-round schedule in place.
Have kids of different ages? We’re pairing or alternating preschool and school-age lesson times on our schedule, making it easier for families with multiple children to take lessons on the same day.
Knowing when and what to register for is easier.
- Registration opens on the 1st of the month, two months before the session begins. For example: January lessons open November 1 and lessons that start in February open December 1.
- Instead of signing up for a specific stage, you'll choose the day and time that works for your family’s routine. During your first lesson, your swim instructor will assess and group your swimmer with others who are also learning the same skills.
Dedicated Pool Time for Instruction
To make lesson scheduling across all age groups possible and create the safest, most supportive learning environment, we are introducing dedicated swim lesson times in select pool areas.
For Swimmers: This creates a calm, low-distraction environment where young swimmers can hear their instructors clearly, build confidence and stay focused on mastering their skills.
For Our Whole Y Community: We know our pools are loved by lap swimmers, water exercise groups and families alike. By establishing consistent lesson windows and alternating schedule days with nearby YMCA locations, every member can count on predictable pool schedules.
Schedules for open swim, lap swimming and lessons will always be available on our app and website so you can plan your visit with ease.
Developing Skills Together
We know every swimmer learns at their own pace. On day one of each new session, our instructors will assess your swimmer's current comfort and skill level. We then group swimmers into swimming pods with peers at a similar stage.
Your child will stay with their pod each week, working through progressive skills together in a supportive group setting. At the end of the session, you’ll receive a personalized progress report tracking their growth.
High Quality, Safety Focused Lessons
We enforce small instructor-to-swimmer ratios:
| Age Category | Age Range | Ratio (Instructor : Swimmers) |
| Parent & Child | 6 to 36 months | 1 : 10 pairs (parent in water) |
| Preschool | 3 to 5 years | 1 : 3 |
| School-Age | 5 to 12 years | 1 : 5 |
| Teen & Adult | 13+ years | 1 : 5 |
Accommodating Swimmer Needs
Every swimmer deserves the opportunity to feel safe and confident in the water. If your swimmer needs additional support or accommodations, our aquatics team will work with your family to help create a lesson experience that works for them. Reach out to your Aquatics Director to talk about your swimmer’s needs.
See You at the Pool
Every update we make is rooted in supporting your swimmers and serving our community better. By expanding our times, simplifying registration and focusing on group learning, we are opening our doors (and lanes) wider than ever before. Your feedback helped shape these changes, and we want to keep hearing from you. We’ll continue listening and making adjustments as we learn what works best for swimmers and families. Thank you for your flexibility and trusting us with your family's water safety journey.
We can’t wait to see you at the pool!
