Tommy Benton, Taylor Bend Family YMCA

Tommy Benton, 2020 Recipient of the YMCA Volunteer Service Award for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads

Tommy is a long time Suffolk resident and YMCA member. He shares that he joined the Y in Suffolk when his boys were little and that they grew up involved in sports at the Y. His boys are grown with families of their own now, but Tommy and his wife, Sheryl, still come to the Y regularly to work out. During Tommy's time on the Board he has been involved in raising the funding and the building of Taylor Bend's KaBoom Playground. He also helped raised funds for TBY's Sport and Camp Pavilion. He is a supporter of our Annual Giving Campaign and a advocate of the Y and does a great job of welcoming potential members on tours. A great thing about Tommy is that when he volunteers, he brings his wife Sheryl, who is another hardworking volunteer. During the time the Y was closed beginning in March due to the pandemic, Tommy and Sheryl were at the Y every Monday and Thursday for eight weeks to assist 10 other volunteers in the packing of almost 4,000 food boxes for our partnership with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. The Taylor Bend Family YMCA is so happy to honor Tommy with this award and to thank him for all he does for the Y.
