As the Canadian wildfires begin to impact air quality in Virginia and North Carolina, we are closely monitoring the situation using the Virginia and North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) forecasts. We will post any updates to how air quality impacts the Y. The following updates are available as of 11:30am on July 23, 2026. 

Thursday, July 23

Virginia Forecast: Currently, the AQI is forecast at 39. No activity caution has been shared.

North Carolina Forecast: Currently the AQI is forecast at 40. No activity caution has been shared.

How does this affect the Y?

  • No operational changes are planned for today.

When the weather gets bad, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads locations make a concerted effort to remain open and available to our community. However, conditions can sometimes become unsafe, and we have to close or delay opening until road conditions clear.
