All ages—from infants to seniors—can learn to swim. Our lessons fit students into one of three different swim levels to ensure an efficient and fulfilling lesson, maximizing the learning potential in every session. Registration includes eight 30-minute lessons that are offered at a variety of times to fit your busy schedule.

SWIM LESSON LEVELS

SWIM STARTERS
Parent/Child

Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention and the importance of supervision.

Stage Descriptions:
Stage A: 
Water Discovery introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment.
Stage B: Water Exploration focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

SWIM BASICS
Preschool • School-Age • Teen/Adult

Students learn personal water safety and achieve swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: swim, float, swim and jump, push, turn, grab. This skill-based approach to swimming includes activities, games and drills.

Stage Descriptions:
Stage 1:
 Water Acclimation increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance.
Stage 2: Water Movement encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance.
Stage 3: Water Stamina develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages.

SWIM STROKES
Preschool • School-Age • Teen/Adult

Swimmers are introduced to the four competitive swimming strokes as well as rescue skills and healthy lifestyle habits.

Stage Descriptions:
Stage 4:
 Stroke Introduction introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke.
Stage 5: Stroke Development introduces breast-stroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke.
Stage 6: Stroke Mechanics refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

 

Activities

Adaptive Swim Lessons

The Y’s adaptive swim lesson program is designed for children with special needs. With the needs of each individual in mind, the goal of this program is to provide basic water instruction and teach water safety skills in a therapeutic manner.

Parent/Child Swim Lessons

In parent/child swim lessons, children ages 6 months to 36 months participate with a parent in the water. A low student-teacher ratio allows participants to safely develop skills and confidence in the water. Skills taught include: pool safety, using flotation devices correctly, skin and sun safety and safe boating; enjoying family time in a water environment; acclimating to the water and getting wet; breath control, sipping and expelling, submerging safely; and handling a child in deep water are components of the program.

Preschool Swim Lessons

In preschool swim lessons, children ages 3 to 5 years participate without a parent in the water. A low student-teacher ratio allows participants to safely develop skills and confidence in the water. Your swim instructor will assign your child's stage based on their swim skills, and children will advance through stages as their skills improve.

School-Age Swim Lessons

School-age swim lessons are for children ages 6 to 12 and are taught progressively, each stage building on skills taught in previous stages. A low student-teacher ratio allows participants to safely develop skills and confidence in the water. Your swim instructor will assign your child's stage based on their ability.

Teen/Adult Swim Lessons

Whether overcoming fear of the water or refining your swim stroke skills for better fitness, it’s never too late to enjoy the fun and health benefits of swimming. In teen/adult swim lessons for ages 13 and older, instructors tailor each class to meet student abilities and goals. Each swim lesson session consists of eight 30-minute lessons. A low student-teacher ratio allows participants to safely develop skills and confidence in the water.

Private/Semi Private Swim Lessons

Private and Semi-Private swim lessons are for individuals who want one on one or small group instruction from a swim lesson instructor. This program is designed to provide individuals with the experience necessary to participate in large group aquatic programs. Each class is a half hour session.

At the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, our number one priority is the safety of our members and guests. We are continually evaluating our protocols and best practices to ensure that everyone enjoys our aquatic venues and remains safe at all times.
