From the board chair & CEO
Each year, as we gather together in February to celebrate the impact of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, we realize how blessed we are to have achieved so much and are humbled by the dedication we see year round from members, donors, volunteers, community organizations and staff. In 2017, the Y delivered on the promise to strengthen the foundations of our communities. We transformed lives and built up our neighbors through initiatives and programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. But we didn’t do it alone. As the song goes, “I believe there are angels among us...to show us how to live, to show us how to give, to guide us with a light of love.”
Nurture Potential
With our 2020 Strategic Plan as our guide, we continued our work in 2017 building confident kids and future leaders through programs like camp, swim lessons, after-school programs and programs that help prevent summer learning loss.
Improve Health
It takes a village. With the help of community partners and dedicated stewards of the Y's mission, 2017 was a year of monumental impact in the areas of healthy living—with a new location, fresh equipment and continued work in preventing chronic disease helping move the mark.
Give Back
Giving back and providing support to our neighbors was a common theme in 2017, across all communities that the Y serves. With friends of the Y lending their hearts and resources, we all helped to continue the legacy of the past 160 years of the Y listening and responding to the needs of our neighbors.
